Welcome to the Manchester and District Branch of the Classical Association, first set up in November 1904
We are a volunteer-run association which brings together researchers, teachers, students, and the interested public to share our enthusiasm for the classical world and its relevance in a 21st century global and diverse world. We host regular public lectures, student workshops, teacher training support sessions and materials, and children’s events and competitions.

A Glimpse of what we offer:
Monthly Athena’s Owls workshops and story competitions for children. Each session involves a mythological story and a craft activity through which the children attending can learn a little about the ancient world and have something to take home at the end of the session – previous projects have involved making mosaics, Roman helmets and sandals, Latin spell tablets, and designing a display of Greek vases.
School events, among which our A-Level study day and our Latin and Greek Reading Competition. We also offer workshops and CPDs for the students of the universities across Manchester and beyond.
Our regular Public Talks, where international and national speakers give a broad range of talks. Recent lectures have explored disability in Ancient Rome, issues of decolonisation in UK museums, race and ethnicity, the reception of ancient monsters in the modern world, and the illicit trade of manuscripts, to name a just a few!
